Why is @imacelebrity still using animals in small enclosed spaces (or at all) and causing them stress with inane screaming and hands going near them ane poking them.. Pythons toads and lizards have feelings too.. just because we may not be able to read/ interpret their body language as easily it doesn't mean stress is not there (cats for example are a prey and predator so its not ideal for them to look vulnerable). Why put them in a space where they can't move away and fight (bite from fear) freeze or attempt to flight but cant because the areas too small. Not on. It is Cruel and mean .. what does it teach people and kids.. that it's okay to make animals feel uncomfortable if it's for our entertainment? To borrow a phrase from Linda La Hughes.. National Adoption Day So many pets can end up in rescue, not because of behavioural challenges but becausetheir owners have been made redundant or marriage broke down. There are lots of reasons to adopt: The idea that a puppy is a blank slate is not true – a pup’s temperament can be due to a variety of factors including stress in the womb and early life experiences. With an adopted pet , if from a reputable rescue centre will have been behaviourally assessed so you know about them – warts and all! Many rescue centres offer behaviour and training support. HAPPY WORLD KINDNESS DAY Did you know that Positive reinforcement training has been shown to motivate animals to participate in training (Innes et al., 2008; Kogan et al., 2007) and secure the correct response (Innes et al., 2008). Studies suggest that such aversive training methods result fear and aggression (Arhant et al., 2010 Blackwell et al., 2008; cited by Ziv 2017) and increased stress (Vieira de Castro et al., 2020), which are animal welfare concerns. Contrastingly, there was no elevation in cortisol in baboons when trained with positive reinforcement (O’Brien 2008). Children and dogs - Animal Mental health awareness week Dogs are tolerant but just like us stress can build up. Pain, loud noise, experiences that have happened one too many times can all build up and result in reactive or aggressive displays. Here are some top tips: • Ask your child to redirect their love and enthusiasm onto a toy dog • Encourage them to show love to their dog by filling up their water bowl instead • Invest in baby gates so your dog can be in a separate room when you can not actively supervise them • Don't allow a child to climb on a dog Watch out for body language Can you see • relaxed wiggly body language? • Is the mouth open and relaxed? • Is the dog actively looking for attention? These are all good signs. If the dog is • Moving away • Barking • Growling They are all ways of saying they would like some space. It's imperative we respect this. If your child is having friends over it's important that they know the rules and boundaries for interacting with your dog too. Animal mental health awareness week - let's talk about barking Just as people may raise their voice in different circumstances (so someone can hear them in stress, or because they are getting a main point across), barking can occur in different contexts too. So how can you tell the difference between barks? Here is some advice about barks. Look at the body language alongside the bark - Is this conducive with being happy? A dog may still wag their tail if they are barking. I appreciate some dogs don't have long tails so this can be tricky to spot. Other signs of nervousness can include showing the whites of the eye, raised fur on the back of their body. Snarling and snapping This is a sign a dog is trying to repel something that they find scary. Different sounding barks - Fear based barks - can be low pitched with growling Noise phobia such as fireworks - can be of high arousal and higher pitch Is there anything you find surprising?Button -

Let's talk about pain this animal mental health awareness week. Did you know there is a huge link between pain and problem behaviour? It's thought that up to 70 % of behavioural problems have a pain link (Mills, 2020). Just like us a dog (or any animal) can be more grumpy and less tolerant when there is pain. Similarly, a dog will still have an enjoyable experience while being in pain at the same time.. they can still run, skip and hop! Just like we can still have cake and have a bad knee... or have a headache and still meet friends for dinner.. two experiences can co-exist. Canine Arthritis Management is a great website that has lots of resources including tips on home adaptations and diaries (as pain signs can wax and wane). Even young dogs can have arthritis symptoms, with some breeds being more genetically predisposed to it. Taking videos of your dog's gait and slowing them down to look for any unusual changes can also be very helpful to take to the vets. Stopping on walks (this could be due to pain/ an aversion to a location where something scary has happened and when a dog goes into freeze mode - not stubborness!) Bunny hopping Lameness A reluctance to sit Gastrointestinal disease can include Floor licking/ licking of surfaces Loose stools/ changes in bowel habits Reluctance to one area of the body being touched Ingesting non food items. Did you know anyone can call themselves a behaviourist? That's why working with someone who has an understanding and ability to spot anything unusual, works on vet referral and ask the right questions is so important. Imagine working with someone who suggested neutering was the right option for your dog, when actually they have underlying pain issues.Button -

Overstimulation 🤪⚡️ A child who goes to two parties in a row where there is candy floss, bouncy castles, cake, coca cola, smarties and musical chairs probably will have a very fun time but they are likely to be wired and very overstimulated. The same thing can occur in dogs if they are in an environment where there is sensory overload. This could involve puzzle feeders that they pick up and drop and clatter or intense running around with other dogs. This can result in mounting/humping behaviours, inability to focus and pulling on the lead. It could thought that doing high impact exercise will help tire a dog out – things such as ball throwing, running or intense activities such as fly ball. If a dog takes part in these things they will build up stamina and need this level of stimulation. Instead, activities that engage the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest) such as sniffing and foraging and licking could help. SEPARATION ANXIETY AND SEPARATION RELATED CHALLENGES - NEW COURSE & THOUGHTS 🐾🐾 I was recently invited onto BBC World Service radio to contribute my thoughts about pet technology - the show aired this morning. Cameras and automated feeders came up in conversation. Some companies claim cameras can fix separation anxiety (porky pie -not true!) You can listen here to the podcast here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct5z6r Here are some info about separation related challenges/separation anxiety that may surprise you... -It is a syndrome (collection of signs) which can differ. It is not a diagnosis. Emotions such as fear, frustration and the panic associated with loss of an attachment figure can be present and overlap. -Feeding and talking wont get to the root cause of this but planned absences working within the pets threshold of stress… and desensitising them to departure cues and helping them feel safe is key. Food is not enough for a pet who does not feel safe, they wont learn – they too stressed and overwhelmed. -A dog may show signs of this as they are frustrated at being contained rather than actually really missing the owner… -Looking sad can be subjective so a camera can’t tell you this. -A PET MAY BE HEIGHTENED IN SPECIFIC CONTEXTS – MAYBE THAT ROOM HAD A LOUD NOISE IN IT, THAT’S WHY THEY ARE DISTRESSED ABOUT BEING IN IT. 🐾 If your dog is finding being home alone stressful while you're out you may be interested in my new course separation SOS https://www.stpawstrainingacademy.co.uk/separation-related-challenges-programme---st-albans. It's national take your dog to work day tomorrow. For some of you, you may work at home but for some people who work in the office, you may be thinking about taking part. I don't want to be the play police but here are some things to consider: Will your dog enjoy being around lots of other dogs? Will they have time to rest and sleep? That's so important as lack of sleep can lead to irritability and/or hyperactivity. Where will they go to the bathroom? Is there an area near by with grass (if that is their preferred substrate). Dogs can get infections through sharing water so it's sensible to bring your own bowl. Do people in the office, who may not have. a dog know not to feed your dog human food like nuts, grapes or chocolate? What is the environment like? Is it really busy with doors being open to roads/car parks etc? This could be dangerous if your dog's recall isn't sound. Thinking about these things as well as your dogs temperament can help you make an informed decision.Button -

Hey @theopaphitis , I created the polite pup club as I was hearing conflicting advice about why your dog is behaving as they are. There are access to courses on topics such as coming back when called, not pulling on the lead , body language, as well as live Q and A sessions and worksheets, no matter the age of the dog: If people are worried about doing the wrong thing in response to your dogs behaviour, I’ve got their back and am here to guide and support them. As a qualified behaviourist, who is a provisional member of the APBC and a dog trainer (who studied a postgraduate diploma in clinical animal behaviour at the University of Edinburgh Royal School of Vet Studies), I use kind, modern methods that find out the motivation and emotion of dogs behaviour. This avoids trying to push a circle in a square (and there is no way your dog is a square!). As well as providing online services, I offer face to face sessions in St Albans and Hertfordshire for help with challenges such as : -Dog to dog reactivity which makes walks stressful and overwhelming -Pulling on the lead and hurting themselves and you -Not coming back when called so your standing there calling them with your heart in your mouth worried they will run off. I also offer puppy classes so your puppy can learn life skills. I set up St Paws Training Academy after wanting to learn everything I could about dogs after setting up my first business, a pet care business with the help of the Princes Trust charity in 2016. After a horrible encounter with a man in the park who went to tap the dog I was with on the nose in the name of ‘training her’, I vouched to learn all that I could to help other dogs not experience training in the wrong hands. BODY LANGUAGE LIKE ALL BODY LANGUAGE CONTEXT IS KEY. SOMEONE ASKED ME IF I WAS FEELING DEFENSIVE ONCE AS I HAD MY ARMS CROSSED.. I ACTUALLY HAD A TUMMY ACHE AND THAT WAS HELPING! YOU MAY ALSO SMILE EVEN IF YOUR NOT HAPPY... The tail A wagging tail doesn't necessarily mean a dog is feeling happy and comfortable. It all depends on the position and movement in the wag. If it is tucked underneath their body they may be feeling insecure. The face Look out for signs that a dog is worried such as tension in their forehead. They may be showing the whites of their eyes - similar to a whale eye. If they are trying to move away from you they may do this by turning their head away The play bow A play bow doesn't always mean play! It can be a distance creating activity so always bear that in mind. In terms of play, puppies should be taking it in turns to chase and mirroring each others body language. One dog should not be doing all the chasing as that is likely to make the other feel intimidated. If your puppy is hiding behind you then that's a sign they want some support! Be their safe space and return to play another day or find less intense play pals.Button -

HOW TO PUPPY PROOF YOUR HOME 🐕 You may be ready to share your life with a puppy but have you thought about your home?Here are 10 ways to puppy proof your home 1. Your puppy can easily escape the garden if there are fences that are not sturdy because of the weather. Check for holes underneath the fences. 2. Block off any gaps behind washing machines or dishwashers and make sure your puppy cannot get through the cat flap. 3. Place tablecloths or dishcloths up high or else your puppy will grab them 4. Invest in a shoe rack as puppies like to explore shoes with their mouth. 5. Ensure wires are out of site or place casing around them to avoid chewing. 6. Puppies can get their tails caught in doors to the garden so ensure you have foam attachments so it can’t slam in the wind. 7. Check house and garden plants as some can make dogs very poorly. 8. Dogs like to go rummaging so making sure the bin has a lid and they can’t get into it is imperative. The same goes for any food waste bins. 9. Keep any paracetamol or other medicines out of the way. 10.Puppies can climb on chairs and up onto tables where there could be dangerous food such as grapes or raisins. Puppy greetings.. what to consider. Temperament is how things can land on us. Puppies, even if they are the same breed of dog, will have different temperaments and what will be okay for one dog, won't be for another.. There is a lot of information about puppy greetings and socialisation but here are 3 considerations when meeting new dogs: 🐕Placing some toys down can take the social pressure off if dogs are unsure about reacting with each other. 🐕Give the puppy time to gather information - if in puppy class allow the puppy to sniff the dogs blanket before interacting. 🐕Allow the puppy to explore dogs, people, random objects and move away if they want to. If a dog learns it can use space to move away then they are less likely to use methods such as growling, snapping etc to gain space.Button -

New Month.. New things! As some of you know, the @princestrust originally helped me set up my first business. They were a brilliant source of support , gave a low interest rate loan and gave me alot of confidence and a plan of action (setting up a business can feel like climbing a huge mountain and you may feel you can't do it). Did you know that 35 % of girls feel their confidence drops aged 13-18? That is a key time of learning. Little dogs often have to shout louder to be heard (growl, snap) etc and get told they have 'little dog sydrome' as they experience lots of people touching them and picking them up. Quite often people won't listen to smaller dogs requests for space.. whereas if you have a Great Dane growling you're going to listen! The predictive brain in action 🧠 Have you heard of the term the body keeps the score? You may have read the book too. Lisa Feldman Barrett, author of How Emotions Are Made - The Secret Life Of the Brain, talks about how trauma is stored in the brain. The brain is constantly predicting what happens next based on past memories. Therefore, if you have lots of negative experiences, potentially in combination with a depleted body budget as explained below you’re likely to predict that they will occur the next time. Have you ever felt grumpy because of lack of sleep, poor diet, or insufficient exercise? A depleted body budget can result in your brain thinking that your body needs energy over and over meaning your body budget is in the red. These can all affect your perception of experiences and If you are working with a dog who is reactive you may minimise or even miss the glimmers (the good things on walks). It is really important to look after yourself when you have a reactive dog too. ❤️ This will be different for everyone based on budget and things they like to do, but here are some ideas to help yourself: Yoga – stretching and breathing are good for you and can help people calm down more quickly. Acting, improvisation can help you hash our experiences, set up lunch dates with friends and take it in turns to treat each other, read an interesting novel (so you are being plunged into someone else’s story and less involved in yours).. or if you prefer TV Corrie or Eastenders may have the same effect! AVOIDING ON LEAD ANGST A lot of dogs can react if they’re on lead. They can often either feel: • Trapped on a lead (and scared) • Frustrated on a lead (as they can’t access something that they want to) Behaviour can look like lunging, barking, standing on back legs, and vocalising. It is important to distinguish if the dog is scared or frustrated. Some dogs feel threatened on the lead as they can’t move away from the dog. This can often occur if the lead is kept very taught by the owner. It can also occur if the lead is kept very short as the dog physically cannot move away. Utilising a long lead so a dog can move away and around is important, as this will allow them to sniff, assess a situation and also have the freedom to move away from it if they would like to. Does the language we use in training matter? I’d say yes. Commanding a dog to do something suggests an order. A cue meanwhile suggests you have built a relationship based on trust and reward. The behaviour and training industry is unregulated. If someone you are thinking of working with uses terms such as balanced training, being the pack leader and suggests using punishment based methods avoid them. OBESITY This can cause osteoarthritis, hypertension and affect a dogs ability to exercise as they may be in pain on their joints and their paw pads. Some breeds can be particularly susceptible to negative effects on their health such as brachycephalic breeds who can suffer with breathing challenges already. If they find it hard to breath anyway because of their stenotic nares obesity will add to this challenge. The problem with those weight cups! A study by German et al., 2011 suggests some care givers overestimated food by a whooping 152% when using the measuring cups! Some of the weight cups have canine and feline (cat and dog) measurements on the same cup – you can easily make the mistake of feeding your pet the incorrect amount so ditch the cup and opt for weighing scales instead – this will give you the exact amount your pet should be eating. PUPPY PARTIES There’s an activity called pass the puppy which concerns me. Many puppies are not used to being handled by their owner or even the breeder in some cases. Early handling is a huge component to puppy welfare with it being identified as having an impact on responses to challenges (Cirulli et al., 2003). Many people may do the following behaviours which can intimidate a puppy. These include: • Leaning over a puppy. • Squeezing them and pulling them towards their face resulting in a nip on the nose. • Not pairing any handling with treats For the puppies being handled by someone they have only just met, smelt and seen can be a concerning experience. They may have not experienced being handled by their owner that much yet, therefore being handled by a stranger can be a scary experience. TAILS TELL A TALE A tail wag doesn’t always mean a dog is happy. I used to think that but it's not true. If it is stiff and wagging slightly and looks like a clock hand that is going back and forth as if it has run out of batteries it suggests a dog is feeling worried. Hugo was very excited in the classes but having the information sent out after the session too meant it was easy to replicate and practice at home. It was also great to meet some like minded puppy parents to chat through challenges!
I would definitely recommend Lisa's classes.

My dog Monty and I had a great experience working with Lisa at St Paws. I'd been struggling with him being quite nervous around other dogs, and reacting and growling as a result. We worked on association with other dogs and Lisa shared alot of things to train in to help us in different situations. It's a long process but we've definitely seen positive progress and continue to work on what Lisa has taught us. Lisa was very patient, gave lots of good insights and clearly has alot of experience and knowledge around dogs, their triggers and reactions.

She also displays good humour which I always appreciate! The literature, links and videos she sent me has been extremely useful. Lisa does not advocate for punitive techniques which had been advised to me by countless people. She explained to me why these are not effective.

I've just had such a positive walk paying attention to his body language - he played nicely on the open space with a little white dog (they were doing mirrored play bows) until she rolled over and I called him back to me. He came back straight away :)
